"Pennies for Patients," The Collection Box is in my classroom, and the goal is to fill it for the next 3 week. The class that collects the most will win a pizza and ice cream party!!! To date, only 2 students have brought in pennies (or dimes, nickels, quarters)!

1. Excel Homework #104: Your child had ample time (45 minutes) to finish in class. If your child wasn't able to finish work at school, please have him/her finish math at home. PLEASE correct your child's work at home. If you find incorrect answers, please guide him/her to the correct answer. WHEN the ENTIRE paper is finished and completely correct, please sign both sides and have your child put it in his/her "Organizer" in the Homework section for the return trip to school. After papers are recorded and corrected, I recycle them at school. HINT: If you find any math papers in your child's "Organizer" they have not been turned in. Please empty the "Completed Work" section of your child's "Organizer" EVERY DAY.
2. Study Cards for Social Studies Test on Thursday, 2/16. We've finished the Social chapters about Government, and your child has 12 cards to study for the test NEXT Thursday, 2/16. Let your child study in front of you (He/she reads the front & tries to remember the back of the card. He/she can flip it over & check if it's the right answer.) You can just monitor. After a few days of this, you ask the questions and he/she can answer. Show the answer if he/she forgets. Discuss the content on each card as well. We've been watching the Government & Voting BrainPop videos in class to reinforce the material.
3. Across the Wide, Dark Sea This week's spelling packet is due Friday, 2/10 . You can locate this packet in the "Homework" section of your child's "Organizer." Please sign each page when it is completed correctly and keep all pages stapled together. Spelling Test on Friday, 2/10 ***The writing assignment on page 69 isn't required.
4. NEW! CORRECT Two Days in May PB pages Due Friday or early next week. Your child has the Seal Surfer Practice Book pages (1/2 sheet stapled to the front) in his/her Homework section. If it has a star, he/she has received a treat because there were no errors. Please help your child correct the errors he/she made as we completed the pages together. AFTER HE/SHE HAS CORRECTED his/her work, please check for accuracy & sign.
5. Literature Circle Job due, Weds., 2/15 **BRING JOB AND BOOK: Your child brought home a Literature Circle last week (Homework Section of his/her"Organizer"). Be sure your child brings his/her completed Literature Circle Job and Book on WEDNESDAY at 7:55, since we start Literature Circle about 8:05. Give your child time to practice reading the report, so he/she is ready to read it to his/her group tomorrow.

However, it is an interactive activity with sound, so your child will need a set of his/her own earbuds to keep at school with his/her flashdrive (thumb drive, memory stick.) Please send in the earbuds as soon as possible with your child's class (NOT classroom) number written on each bud. It is the number he/she writes next to his/her name every day. Ask your child what his/her classroom or line up number is.

Yearbooks. Every year, there are students who don't have a yearbook to collect their peers' signatures. Please consider buying one now. The envelopes went home last week. Yearbooks are $15.00., and if your child can't find the yearbook envelope, you can send it in a plain envelope WITH YOUR CHILD'S NAME WRITTEN ON THE FRONT.

1. The 2 minute TIME TEST on 1x0 through 4x9 was today. Congratulations to the students who passed in the 2 minutes allowed: Sophie N., Nate A., Sophie A., Juliet, & Rachel!! The rest of the class failed the test and need to study flash cards over the break every day, so that know them for the next time test in January. Students who don't know their facts are taking longer to finish math because they are counting on their fingers. It's especially important now because we're doing long division, and it's extremely difficult to complete the problems if they don't know their basic facts.
2. Today Study for Science Test TOMORROW Your child has participated in several experiments in class involving energy & matter. We read & discussed the unit in November & December. Today your child made "study cards" as we reviewed the concepts in the unit. Please help your child study his/her "study cards." Science terms/questions are on the front, and the definitions/answers are on the back of each card. There are 17 cards. At first, your child can study by himself/herself, and then when he/she is ready, you can read the front of each card and test to be sure he/she knows the terms by checking the back of each card. This is a study skill that will use in the future as he she moves into Jr. High School, High School, and College. You are teaching a method of study for future years. We're playing "Energy/Matter" Jeopardy in class, too.

Some had difficulty with the concept of writing down key phrases and words in order to remember what was presented. Most did an excellent job and understood the purpose of taking notes for a test. If your child didn't record all the information needed to study for the test, I attached a "student sample" for your child to study. Your child should know 3 ways the Ohlones got their food, and 3 types of food they ate. He/she should know what houses were made of and what was used for cooking. He/she should also know what region of California the Ohlones lived in. Please have your child read his/her notes to you and explain what each presentation was about in preparation for the test tomorrow.

Be sure that he/she has a capital at the beginning of the question and a question mark at the end. Help your child come up with one of the suggestions on the key. Be sure to help your child on the back and with the "Create Your Own Problem" at the end of the test, and do several problems to be sure your child understands the process.

If your child wasn't able to finish work at school, please have him/her finish math at home. PLEASE correct your child's work at home. If you find incorrect answers, please guide him/her to the correct answer. WHEN the ENTIRE paper is finished and completely correct, please sign both sides and have your child put it in his/her "Organizer" in the Homework section for the return trip to school. After papers are recorded and corrected, I recycle them at school. HINT: If you find any math papers in your child's "Organizer" they have not been turned in. Please sign each page when it is completed correctly and keep all pages stapled together. 3. Study The Keeping Quilt Summary Test on the story this Friday. Study the summary on M, T, W, Th and TURN IN ON FRIDAY, the day of the test.
4. *NEW Literature Circle Job due Weds., 10/12 **BRING JOB AND BOOK: Your child brought home a Literature Circle last week (Homework Section of his/her"Organizer"). Be sure your child brings his/her completed Literature Circle Job and Book on WEDNESDAY at 7:55, since we start Literature Circle about 8:05. Give your child time to practice reading the report, so he/she is ready to read it to his/her group tomorrow.

If there are spelling errors (labels) please have your child correct the words. Spelling is not marked wrong but should be fixed. Have your child write labels on any problem he/she missed (ie 3 total people, About 100 notes, etc). Labels are marked 1/2 off. If your child missed the last problem on the back, please have him/her write a story problem using the information in the story (ie NO "if" questions because you can not introduce numbers that are not in the story.) Be sure that he/she has a capital at the beginning of the question and a question mark at the end. Help your child come up with one of the suggestions on the key. Be sure to help your child on the back and with the "Create Your Own Problem" at the end of the test, and do several problems to be sure your child understands the process.**Please sign and return the test when all 24 problems, back and front, are completed and corrected.
6. CORRECT Practice Book (PB pages) for The Waterfall Your child completed this work in class. I presented the concepts and/or initiated discussion about story. Students gave responses, and I wrote answers out for them to copy. Since students have varied abilities in reading, writing, & handwriting, it's possible your child didn't copy answers correctly or wasn't able to understand the lesson(s). Please have your child correct all errors (spelling, handwriting, content, punctuation, etc), and when the pages are correct, SIGN & RETURN the work by the end of the week, so that I know you coached/taught your child.
7. CORRECT "Review" Homework Packet Due any time this week. Your child has last week's homework in his/her Homework section. If it has a "highlighted" star & stamped completed, he/she has received a treat because there were no errors. My husband & I are GRANDPARENTS!!! Bryce Matthew Miller was born on 9/28 at 3:6 PM. He is 8 lbs 22 1/2 in. long! We're going to see him this weekend :) Yippee!!

**I will send the pictures home tomorrow when it is less wet. We had already packed up, and I was afraid the packages of pictures would get crushed and/or wet. We had a HUGE puddle in front of our door!

Each of the samples is graded +4 because that was the highest grade using the old system. In other words, each of those +4's is now a +5......what I would expect of a child who turns in an advanced level Literature Circle assignment.
